Executive Director Jhoana Hirasuna
Community members coming together to make a difference is the heart of Shepherd’s Pantry which helps those in need get back on their feet again. The mission of Shepherd’s Pantry begins with providing food, resources and services from a faith-based perspective to those in need, while valuing the dignity of all individuals and striving to promote their independence.
The last sentence in Shepherd’s Pantry mission statement truly captivated Jhoana Hirasuna, a social worker, who embodies this spirit of service. Her journey to Shepherd’s Pantry, is one marked by compassion, dedication, and commitment to empowering others.
“What attracted me to Shepherd’s Pantry… was their mission to promote independence and dignity among individuals in need,” said Hirasuna “It’s not just about providing food; it’s about empowering people to overcome challenges and build a better future for themselves.”
Hirasuna quickly realized her interest in helping people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse after she started working at Pacific Clinic’s a community-based nonprofit provider of behavioral and mental health services and supports in 2003. After 12 years at Pacific Clinics, she transitioned to the Salvation Army in Pasadena, where she became the director of social services for six-and-a- half-years.
Hirasuna learned about Shepherd’s Pantry and when she came out to volunteer at Shepherd’s Pantry in Irwindale she witnessed how much good work was being done and how much impact the organization was having.
“Aside from being a food pantry, it was going beyond food, meaning that it had a case manager program newly developed, and it was really looking to provide people with additional resources and solutions outside of just the food,” said Hirasuna.
The goal is to provide comprehensive support that goes beyond immediate needs. Shepherd’s Pantry assists individuals with budgeting, money management, and goal-setting to help break the cycle of poverty. Hirasuna’s journey from social worker to executive director at Shepherd’s Pantry is an example of how one individual can make a difference in their community.
